When The Apron Sink Won’t Work

I’ve been blessed to have Better Homes and Gardens share my kitchen on their Instagram page a few times. I’ve learned it’s best not to look at the comments because there’s always someone that’s going to find something to criticize and, worse, feel compelled to actually share those comments. But before I learned this lesson, I was looking over the comments and someone mentioned it was a shame I didn’t have a pretty farmhouse sink in my farmhouse kitchen.

Believe me, honey, I would’ve if I could’ve.

In the land of builder homes, you don’t really get to choose those sorts of things. And I’m not sure I would’ve even thought to put an apron farmhouse sink in anyway. I was just starting to become interested in home decor when we built our house. But my thoughts were centered on colors of comforters and curtains, not sink styles.

The Old Sink

But then I stumbled into the home decor world of Instagram where farmhouse decor was king. I gazed longingly at the apron style sinks. Of all the things our home needed, a new sink was not high on the priority list. I still daydreamed and showed my husband pictures. We even found the super cheap Ikea one and I thought maybe it was a possibility. My husband did some research and we realized something. The only way I could get an apron sink was to get rid of our brand new granite countertop and cut into our cabinetry. Uh, not happening.

I pushed that daydream to the side and focused on other aspects of the kitchen I could work with. New pendant lights over the island. Peel and stick backsplash. We took the doors off our cabinets to make some open shelving (you can check out that post here).

Which brings us to this past Christmas. I decided to look into what other options I had to get that farmhouse kitchen sink look without the apron sink. And I decided a single basin, white cast iron sink would work just fine. It fit into what my in-laws spend on me for Christmas so it was ordered (this Kohler one from Home Depot). I picked out the most beautiful kitchen faucet (check it out here). I couldn’t believe it was finally all coming together.

And then it didn’t come all together. The sink didn’t fit in the preexisting hole in our kitchen. Yes, we had measured. But the sides of the sink were sort of rounded and threw off the measurements. But once I saw that sink somewhat in the hole, my heart skipped a beat and I knew I had to find another sink that would fit.

And I did. After measuring every single thing and reading a comment left from someone that had bought the exact same first sink that didn’t fit, we felt comfortable ordering this one. And it fit. Happy dance. Big smiles.

And the new sink.

And I love it! It’s an adjustment from the double basin I’ve had my entire life, but it’s a good adjustment! Until next time!

From my porch to yours,

Sharlie
