Whitewashing the Bed

Have you ever looked around a room in your house and realized you have a hot mess going on? Just me? After living here for about a year, that’s what I began to realize about our master bedroom. We had moved all of our bedroom furniture from our old house into the new house. And hot mess pretty much describes what we had going on. It was cramped. You looked around and it was furniture. Bed here. Chest of drawers there. Big dresser there. Two night stands here and there. You would occasionally bang your hip into a piece of furniture if you moved too hastily.

Change needed to happen. I had three problems going on.

  1. My bedroom furniture was brown. I currently am not digging brown furniture (in my house…it’s totally fine in your house!).
  2. We had way too many pieces of furniture. Some of it had to go.
  3. The ambience of the room was all wrong. I wanted peaceful and relaxing and that just wasn’t happening.

Sheesh, not my best styling. I’ve come a long way these last few months.

Anyway, my first step was to focus on the bed because I knew, if nothing else, I was stuck with this bed. I could get rid of the rest of the furniture, but we had to have a bed and my husband wasn’t even considering a new one. I decided I wanted to try white washing it. And after watching several YouTube videos, I took the plunge. The good news, I will tell you how I did it. The bad news, I can only tell you how I did it because I didn’t document the process. It’s super easy though.

Get chalk paint, paint brush, and some pieces of cardboard. Dip brush in paint, wipe of excess on cardboard, swipe brush on the piece you are working on. You’ll end up with something like this.

Big difference, huh?

I’m not even going to lie. It took a good week for my husband and I to like it. For the first two days, I would sometimes walk in our bedroom and wonder what I had done to our expensive bedroom furniture that we bought, like, ten years earlier.

But you know what? I’m glad I took the plunge. My reasoning was I could go back and paint it white if I really hated it. But I love it and I feel like our bed stands out compared to most things you buy in a store right now.

Advice for the day: Don’t let fear hold you back from what you really want.

Part II will be up soon. Spoiler hint: Can you get by without dressers?
